National Association for Advancing Autism Education

Driving change and improving outcomes together

Autistic children and young adults want teachers to understand autism and for the classroom to be a positive learning environment. They want to succeed. Teachers and senior leaders in educational settings recognise that inclusive teaching practices require the knowledge, expertise, and resources to deliver. Parents want happy children in education with the right support, at the right time.

The National Association for Advancing Autism Education is newly formed in 2023 to actively respond to changes in the educational landscape across England, in particular the impact of these changes on the education for autistic children and young adults (up to 25 years old).

The National Association is a membership organisation that brings together experts across the field, with the voice of autistic children, young adults, and their parents, to drive the change we want to see and to produce the in-school resources needed. It is a safe space for dialogue and respectful challenge to ensure outstanding educational outcomes for autistic children and young adults.
Together we will:
  • Shape best practice in schools, colleges and other educational settings
  • Influence policy specific to autism education
  • Bring together and harness the strengths from all pedagogical and philosophical approaches
  • Generate content for publication
  • Collaborate with the wider network, recognising that education is one part of a child’s developmental journey
Membership is sought from:
  • Autism organisations with a focus on education
  • Independent schools, MATs, Maintained Schools
  • Colleges and Higher Education settings
  • Early Years’ nursery organisations
  • Independent education experts
  • Allied Health Professional education leads
  • Local Authorities
  • National organisations working within the field (E.g. NASS, NATSPEC, nasen)

Hearing the autistic voice

We will seek the voice of autistic children and young adults through reference groups and forums established specifically for this purpose. Views and opinions will be systematically sought via a range of means including online meetings, digital polls and surveys, and face-to-face gatherings.
